Protomodernism Part 1 and 2

          Protomoderism is an era that evolved from the Art nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement. It began in 1897 and ended in 1959. This Era rejected the historical styles and brought in more modern looks to this era. Protomoderism experimented with many factors that haven't been done in the past movements such as expanding on form and ideas. Many of the designers experimented with geometric shapes, primary colors and unity.  Above is a Werkbund exhibition that was created in 1914. This building was a part of  the Deutscher Werkbund movement which was focused in Germany. Germany had a wide variety of impact on the protomoderism era. This movement in Germany was in relation to the arts and crafts movement. The Germans protested against the artistic establishment and set up the stage for the art deco style.   Art Nouveau 02/06/23 “New art” is the era of new modernism art being brought into design. We looked last week on Art nouveau and what it entails as far as the buildings, material and who contributed to making the “New art” come alive to what it is today. With that being said two individuals had a huge impact on the design of influencing Art Nouveau. That would be Tiffany and Sullivan, as they had huge impacts in designing buildings in Chicago.    Louis H. Sullivan, Carson, Pirie,Scott This is a building in Chicago that Sullivan designed which was Carson Pirie back in the day and now it's a Target. This building was one of Sullivan's most poetic buildings built due to the two story structure being decorated inside and out. It resembles the New Art with the glass, metal and decorative elements on the outside of the structure.  Detail was very important in the Art Nouveau design as it shows many details to what makes the building so unique.
