Art Nouveau part two

 Art Nouveau

02/06/23

“New art” is the era of new modernism art being brought into design. We looked last week on Art nouveau and what it entails as far as the buildings, material and who contributed to making the “New art” come alive to what it is today. With that being said two individuals had a huge impact on the design of influencing Art Nouveau. That would be Tiffany and Sullivan, as they had huge impacts in designing buildings in Chicago.

  Louis H. Sullivan, Carson, Pirie,Scott

This is a building in Chicago that Sullivan designed which was Carson Pirie back in the day and now it's a Target. This building was one of Sullivan's most poetic buildings built due to the two story structure being decorated inside and out. It resembles the New Art with the glass, metal and decorative elements on the outside of the structure.

Detail was very important in the Art Nouveau design as it shows many details to what makes the building so unique. This era focused on the features of decorative style and curvilinear forms which I thought adds a great amount of detail to a facade.

Above is a close up of the Carson building showing the natural elements contributed with the curvilinear detail that was mentioned earlier. The swirls throughout the facade and adds emphasis to its circular structure overall .

Art Nouveau has some key elements which were modern applications to these interior facades. Louis Comfort Tiffany had a huge contribution to modern applications in the interior spaces. He was a designer that focused on decorative arts. He focused on Glass and metal materials to use throughout his work.

These two pieces of art were some of Louis Comfort Tiffany's designs. He created plenty of lamps that were glass as shown above. This included  mystical natural elements that were featured also. All his work was inspired by nature which I thought was shown in his art work. With him having designed colorful art it did come  with more neutral designs also. Below are some examples.

In today's era Art Nouveau has come a long way with modern architecture ,interior and modern furniture. Today Art nouveau is more relevant than ever from inspiring designs that were based on Louis and Sullivian. With them being very relevant in Chicago creating a vast variety of buildings to the art now.

One step Further:

Louis H. Sullivan - was considered to be the “ Father of SkyScrapers”. Due to him being able to create visual unity in tall buildings.  He was inspired by nature and included that in commercial buildings and furniture. He was the first architect to use steel frames for skyscrapers. Which was quite interesting to learn about considering that is very essential in buildings built today. When creating buildings he also went by the term “Form follows Function” which I think he used as his motto throughout designing. With that being said he was very known for designing beautiful glass lamps inspired by nature as mentioned earlier.

  1. Kahlan,
I liked how when talking about Sullivans work you included the image of the Carson building but also zoomed in on the detail that the Carson building had. The imagery showed how impactful those details are as well how powerful. Not only did Sullivan want to create tall vertical buildings but also create them with details in curve form. You did a well job at overing Tiffanys work and the impact he had on revising windows to stain glass with his artistic work. I found the view on Louis H Sullivan Architecture to be very interesting and showcased things I did not know he designed.

  2. Kahlan,
I liked how you not only focused on the building of the two designers we learned about but you also went into detail about the different characteristics the features of Art Nouveau produced, such as the detailed design on the Carson building facade. You did a great job showing the many designs and pieces of work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. I appreciate how you explained the design of his many stained glass lamp designs and even the furniture he produced as well.

  3. Kahlan,
Thank you for an excellent Blog entry discussing Art Nouveau in the United States. Introducing this section with a discussion of the Carson Pirie Scott Building was great. I loved the details that you showed in your images and description.
I also appreciated the images you posted concerning Louis Comfort Tiffany's work. You showed us examples of vibrant and natural colors. I loved that you showed his furniture too.
Diving deeper into the work of Louis Sullivan was a great idea. You reminded us of his motto of "Form Follows Function" and that he was the "Father of the Skyscraper" Well Done.
    Total Points: 50/50.
